Addaction is offering new mums in Medway, a series of free workshops to help them with their young babies.
The 6-week Feel Well Live Well course will offer help to new mums who are finding it hard to adjust to life with their baby. aged up to 18 months.
The classes are designed to help the women to manage anxiety or depression in a different way.
The course, which will be held on Wednesdays at Brompton Children’s Centre will be delivered by a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner, who is specifically qualified in teaching people how to manage anxiety and depression.
A health visitor will also be on-hand at each of the 2.5 hour sessions to assist the mums with any problems or answer any questions they have.
The sessions are based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and will help the new mums to understand how their thinking impacts on how they feel, behave and communicate.
Each workshop aims to educate, encourage and inspire, whilst using self- help materials, imagery, relaxation, and interpersonal skills to help improve symptoms.
Heidi Towsey, Addaction’s Mental Health Services manager for Medway, said: “People who have just had a baby up to 18 months who may be experiencing anxiety or low mood are encouraged to get in touch with us to see if we can help.”
One in four people have these problems and the aim of the course is to bring new mums together to offer coping strategies and ways of managing their feelings which are common after having a baby.
Nobody has to share anything they don’t want to but our practitioners will be able to offer help and support.
Mums can bring their babies with them and also be supported by a health visitor who will come to the sessions too.
The workshops will cover:
• Introduction and first steps to wellbeing
• Stress and anxiety
• Sleep hygiene and stress reduction techniques
• Low mood
• Low self-esteem and assertiveness
• Self-help resources and CBT
